We are joining in this initiative so this page will record some of our actions over the next few weeks
13th – 20th May 2026 A week of Hope to highlight that many lovely things happen
Hope always counts. But this week it is actually being counted. Head to the Community Hub for everything you need to get started and to read more about this activity on a national level
Our actions.
Growing Hope
This is being led by supporter Trish Richardson who is involved with the community Garden in Clyro [ Itself an act of hope and love]
She emailed on 20th April as follows’ I have had 2 conversations today.
The one with Sarah at the castle was very positive. She has offered the piece of land in the photo below. ( It’s on the left at the top of the drive where lots of people walk past) for us to make a garden of hope. I met Brandon who is the new maintenance man at the castle and he was very enthusiastic about the idea as was Sarah. The idea would be to use some stone from the castle to landscape the site. When the time is right plant some flowers of hope – daffodils, forget me nots etc. Meanwhile, I can go and tidy the site and rake the soil and plant some of the wildflowers I have. At some time we can get the schools involved painting stones with words of hope. If the group agree we could get a board done to explain the purpose of the garden etc. If ok with all I’m happy to lead on it all. I have a contact for the board sign which might mean there is no cost to that. I can provide all other bits and pieces.
The other conversation was with Jodie Griffith, Project Officer for Keep Wales Tidy in Powys (Jodie.Griffith@keepwalestidy.cymru)
She is leading a project called Breaking Barriers which looks at how the barriers can be reduced so that people in a disadvantaged group (refugees) can access nature.
She may be able to help us with funding for our Welcome Day in September and other projects. ‘
And we have lots of wildflower seeds that we hope local schools might use to make small gardens of hope …
Hay and Talgarth school have seeds for their own small patchs of growing hope.

My own little act of hope was courtesy of Jan Shivel who gifted me a bowl of amazing tulips which sits in our roadside verge and gives enormous pleasure to me and all passers by in Llangorse.

A leisurely lunch with friends at one friends home. We managed to eat and chat. for about 5 hours and didn’t once mention the election. We talked about tree planting [ for the future as most of the trees will mature long after our days!] curlews, pied wag tails, the delicious food and our friend’s efforts to bring us together . Definitely an act of kindness to all concerned.
Monthly meeting of the group was in Talgarth Library where our friend Jan ,a retired librarian, made teas and coffees and plied us with biscuits and delicious lemon Polenta cake with strawberries. She was rewarded with our beautiful T towel that arrived today with Virginia.

Welcome day in Talgarth gave hope to loads of people from all the organisations involved and the 56 visitors and Dudley the coach driver. https://hbtsr.cityofsanctuary.org/2026/05/18/hbtsr-welcome-day-brings-community-together-in-talgarth

Llangorse Church in Wales School worked upon a collaborative art and poetry display about celebrating refugees and celebrated Jesus as arguably the world’s most famous refugee.

Another great act of hope and kindness is from Cathy and Dennis who run a fruit and vegetable stall in Abergavenny. Dennis who is in his 80’s rises before dawn to go to Cardiff market to see what he can buy that is cheap and good quality. He and Cathy then often give HBTSR fruit at cost or less[ ! ]for the welcome days. Last week we were given a tray of about 14 mangoes and a box of yellow kiwi fruit as well as grapes and oranges which were much appreciated by the visitors and organisers.
