Llangorse, Powys – 28 February 2026 –
A highly successful fundraising evening took place at Llangorse Community Hall on Saturday, 28th February, organised by Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTSR).

The event brought together members of the local community and supporters from across the area for an evening of warmth, generosity and solidarity. Guests enjoyed a lively evening centred around an abundant Middle Eastern feast prepared by a large number of supporters in their own homes . The menu featured a delicious array of dips , breads and olives, tagines, hearty stews, a wide variety of salads, falafel, shish kebabs, and fragrant biryani. Desserts included caramelised oranges, a selection of biscuits, almond orange cake and baklava.

In addition to the feast, guests took part in a quiz and had opportunities to learn more about the vital work HBTSR carries out in supporting people seeking sanctuary in South Wales.

A silent auction featured a framed screen print kindly donated by local artist Phil Clarke and a collection of Black Mountains Pottery made by Pauline Paterson and generously donated by Barbara and Colin Whitticase. Together with a raffle and generous donations from attendees, the evening raised over £2,000 to support refugee families with essential needs, integration support and community-building initiatives across the region..

The evening was marked by a strong sense of community spirit, with many attendees commenting that for food of such quality and quantity they would happily have paid much more. At the end of the evening, plenty of takeaway containers were filled, ensuring nothing went to waste.
A spokesperson for HBTSR said:
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, volunteered, cooked and contributed to making the evening such a success. The generosity shown by our community enables us to continue offering practical support and a warm welcome to those rebuilding their lives.”

Special thanks go to Penny, Rachel, Becky F, Aideen, Tina, Alison, Margaret, Melrose, Ailsa, Sriyani, Kumari, Becky M, Ord, Lawrence, Chris, Paul, Alex, Kathy, Mary, Adil, Robert, Henry and Bethany for their tremendous hard work in ensuring the evening was such a success. And this despite a number of adverse personal circumstances for key players and the timing of the event linking into the start of American bombing of Iran.
HBTSR looks forward to continuing to host future events that bring people together in support of sanctuary and inclusion.
