Crickhowell Pupils Call on MP to Champion Refugee Rights

Crickhowell, Powys – July 16, 2025- Article written with year 6 pupils

Year 6 pupils at Crickhowell Community Primary School have written heartfelt letters to their local MP, David Chadwick, urging Parliament to change the law to allow people to apply for refugee status from outside the UK.
The activity, carried out during Refugee Week 2025 in June, saw students researching the challenges faced by refugees and the current limitations of UK asylum policy. Having met several refugees over the past few months, the children were moved by the stories of displaced families and decided to take action by writing directly to their elected representative.
“As a pupil of a school of sanctuary, I am concerned about the travel from some countries to reach asylum,” said Isla, 11.”

We know asylum seekers have a lot of difficulties trying to get from one country to another,” said Jack, 11.
The letters call on Mr. Chadwick to support legislation that would allow asylum applications to be made from outside the UK—potentially saving lives and reducing the risks faced by vulnerable people forced to make dangerous journeys.
David Chadwick, MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe, praised the students’ initiative when he met them. He outlined his job and answered many questions they had about the running of the country, including a review of speed limits in Wales.
The school’s headteacher, Mr Robert Francis, said the project was designed to help children understand their role as active citizens. “We want our pupils to know that their voices matter. This project has shown them that even at a young age, they can influence change.”
The children now await a formal response from Mr. Chadwick, hopeful that their letters will spark a wider conversation in Parliament about the UK’s responsibilities toward refugees.
