A small group of young men seeking asylum visited Drovers Cycles with Mark from Newport Gap Sanctuary on the 6th November . They were welcomed by Anna and Luke who together with Andy and James helped teach some specialist bike maintenance issues that the newly formed Gap bike group had been struggling with. Anna had prepared some delicious vegetable chilli but despite healthy appetites the students were so interested in learning that they needed several invitations before they downed tools and even then it was with the promise that they could have a further session after lunch. S spoke for all when he noted his surprise at how time had flown by. Over lunch, Luke and Anna discussed their bike rides in Africa with great interest from the visitors and it was a good opportunity to discuss how valuable a bike can be in giving people freedom to explore their area and to attend college.
HBTSR have supported the Bike group by supply of bikes needing some work before being ‘rehomed’, by purchasing some parts, supply of lights and by occasional sessions in Newport with Miv. Drovers Cycles have been invaluable in providing expertise and time on a number of occasions and also previously negotiated a supply of helmets and bike lights and locks from one of their suppliers.
